Wrap-Up of 2004’s 13th Annual MVPA Awards:

Held May 20, 2004 at the Orpheum Theater in downtown Los Angeles, the 13th Annual MVPA Awards were a tremendous success.

Hosted by Brooke Burke and Patton Oswalt, and featuring performances by hip-hop dance troupe the Groovaloos, the MVPA Awards were also lucky enough to showcase presenters like Christina Aguilera, Juliette Lewis, Dwight Yoakam, Macy Gray, Hal Sparks, Jeremy Piven, Lacey Chabert, Joe Hahn (Linkin Park), Hoobastank, Emily VanCamp, Bai Ling, Ken Jordan (Crystal Method), Shane Brolly, Mark Goodman, Geoff Downes & John Payne (Asia), Lauren C. Mayhew and Patricia Arquette.

The only award show that recognizes the tremendous technical and creative achievement behind the scenes of music videos, the MVPA handed out awards to such luminary video directors as Bryan Barber, Dave Meyers, Jake Nava, Jonas Akerlund, and director of the year, David LaChapelle.

Additionally, statuettes went to such artists as Laurent (Best Hair), Christopher Soos (Best Cinematography), Dave Hussey (multiple MVPA winner for Best Colorist), the team from R!ot (Best Special Effects), Francesca Tolot (Best Make-Up), Eric Beauchamp (Best Art Direction), Charlie Johnston, Geoff Hounsell, & Andy Grieve (Best Editing) and co-winners Carol Beadle and Trish Summerville (Best Styling).

Finally, the blend of music video and feature film success was apparent in both established feature directors taking home music video awards (Gore Verbinski and Mark Pellington), and in the trio of honorary awards given this year. Director Mark Romanek presented the Lifetime Achievement award to David Fincher, while Spike Jonze’s induction into the Hall of Fame for his 1994 Beastie Boys “Sabotage Video” and Michel Gondry’s acceptance of the Kratz Award for Creative Excellence rounding out the group.
